‘Guys please don’t let this be more popular than my rocket photos’: Gregory the grumpy cat steals the spotlight from his hooman’s ameowzing astrophotography with just one post on X

• Andrew McCarthy produces ameowzing portraits, including airplanes flying directly in front of the sun, the Artemis II launch, and many more pictures that literally made our jaw drop to the floor. But, the real star that he photographs is Gregory, and his fans know it. Gregory is purrpetually upset about everything, from the size of the Amazon boxes his dad orders to not getting enough attention from his devoted, two-legged servant. This only adds to his feline fame and makes his purrsonal light shine brighter.

  Recently, McCarthy posted an update from his cat sitter of Gregory looking purrticularly peeved when his cat sitter turned on the lights unexpectedly, which went quickly became a trending post on X. As of right now, it’s at about 35,000 likes, and for comparison, his purrfessional photography gets between 5-10,000 likes.

  Does it make sense? Yes, and no. On one hand, we feel like the general public has become a bit numb to beautiful photography due to the slop from generative AI. We want to be clear that we are in no way comparing his talent to some randomly generated photo from ChatGPT, but a gorgeous picture can be generated in a few seconds with the right prompt. It will never replace a human eye, but it certainly has become more available recently. On the other hand, as members of the cat-loving community, it just goes to show that no matter how other-worldly the scenery is, people will always prefer a cat picture. Why? We can’t explain it. People just love cats, and we’re one of those people.
